HOME DELIGHTS: Roasted Vegetables

Image
A reference for Better Half: ☞ How to roast any vegetable
"Take a look at that recipe and see what it says," Better Half suggests.
It's one of those "pocket" things that pop up when I open a tab. I sigh and click on the image. A quick browse tells me what I already know. Veg. In oil. Roasted. Pretty straight forward.

POLITICAL HUMOR: Mika - Morning Joe

Image
I don't watch TV.  I do park my butt on YouTube and watch snippets from various shows. Stephen Colbert monologues, Seth monologues, Hoarders, Ring of Fire, documentaries, whatever. Every so often I'll take in some commentary from "Morning Joe".I'm not a huge fan of the show. It's alright. Joe Scarborough is a bit too loud and shouty that early in the morning. His co-host and wife, Mika Brzezinski, often sits in stony silence while he goes off on a tangent. The formula obviously works for them.
It came as a total surprise to see Mika "pulling a Joe" yesterday. Does she normally indulge in vociferous wrath? I honestly don't know. She was certainly channeling the thoughts of many Americans.

My Thoughts on TALES OF ARCADIA: Wizards

Image
Wizards, the third installment of the Tales of Arcadia trilogy, dropped on Netflix yesterday. There are already a plethora of reviews.  This is not one of them.Instead, this is my opinion of a few events and twists found within the new series. Some were awesome. Others were a let-down.

Let's get the first bit out of the way. No, Wizards is not the end of the franchise. The original Netflix film, Rise of theTitan,is supposed to drop in 2021. In addition to del Toro's tweet, you can browse this article from Report Door.
Here it is: EVERYBODY - And I mean, everybody, comes back 2021 for a big, bold, spectacular feature film that ties every part of the myths! Final Arcadia element! First quarter 2021!!! https://t.co/jRryrQCYXP— Guillermo del Toro (@RealGDT) August 7, 2020I'm certainly hoping "EVERYBODY" includes Barbara Lake. Trollhunters didn't treat Barbara as a stereotypical mom figure. She added depth, grounding the series in a bit of our own reality even as he…

PET TIPS: Stairs and Shed Fur

Image
Shed fur. We learn to live with it. Well, most of us do. We either tolerate the fuzzy tumbleweeds piling into corners, and the occasional strand on a plate, or the layers left on couches - or we clean it weekly, if not more often.

The problem is keeping it under control. Groomers are in business for a reason. Or you can save money by grooming at home.

Know your breed before you acquire it; if you can't dedicate time for grooming, find a lower maintenance dog. Don't expect your husky or German shepherd to shed just a little. The undercoat comes out in clumps. But a short-haired chihuahua? Less fussing, easier brushing.

(Yep, huskies shed like mad. Check out Felisha's upbeat channel on YouTube if you'd like to learn more about the breed: lishieandfamily.)
Dust mopping and vacuuming are easy ways to remove hair from floors and furniture. But what about those stairs?
We removed the carpet at our last house. Our pommy and GSD were fur explosions twice a year. It made the fur s…

HOME DELIGHTS: Potato & Pepper Sausage Bake

Image
The Gruffhouse folks look forward to warm and hearty dishes as Autumn approaches. The simpler, the better, especially after a long day. It doesn't get much easier than Potato & Pepper Sausage Bake.

The recipe originally came from a contest sponsored by Taste of Home magazine. Ashli Claytor's entry was a prize-winner. It'll please your family as well.
"When my family smells this dish baking in the oven, they know they are in for a treat! If you like spice, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or switch the mild Italian sausage to hot Italian sausage." —Ashli Claytor I've toyed a bit with the recipe, mainly because the menfolk in this family don't know the meaning of "normal portion" when it comes to this meal. I generally get 4 servings of veg out of it, though it's less if my Better Half hoards all the potatoes.
The type of sausage depends upon your tastes. I've made it using Kroger brand sweet, mild, and hot sausage. Each works well. If…

THE GREAT RECOVERY: 1 year later

Image
It's been a year since my surgery. I had a year to cope with the loss of my lady bits. It sounds stupid, I know. But we never had kids, so this felt like a nail in my coffin.

Also, I had the parts removed because of the current war on opioids.

"This agony has been part of my life since I was nine years old; I've bitched about it over the years.  Though I've had prescription narcotics since I was twelve, I have never abused them for fear that any addiction would lead to having nothing at all each month.  The thought scared me, to be frank, and so I only used the medication when I had reached my pain level maximum.  And, when medication failed, I went to the ER and they'd hit me up with Dilaudid."

It wasn't until afterward that I learned the reason behind the excruciating monthly pain: the lining of my uterus grew into the organ itself. That's why I had full-on contractions every month. That's why I went through a 12 hour overnight pad in an hour, a…
