NEW SUV!

Dad is finally home. It's good to have him back though Mum has been a basket case all night due to exhaustion.  Now nearly 1 AM, and I can sit down and relax before bed.

We killed two birds with one stone today. Dad shouldn't be driving anymore and neither BH and I find his old Mercury Sable comfortable to ride in (or drive). It's a good little car but it's not very accessibly for people with disabilities or limited mobility.

We stopped at the dealership on Friday.  The initial plan was to trade it in for a Town and Country minivan.  The problem was not only the cost (compared to the vehicle's age) but also us footing three car payments (truck, Caliber, and newest car).  Team Automotive came to the rescue once more.

Our salesman, Frank, didn't like the fact that we were paying on a lemon (Caliber), and didn't want to saddle us with future problems found in most used cars.  He worked with the finance team and his manager, and called us on Saturday to let us know he found a good deal.  Sadly, we couldn't return his call until late, and so we reached out to him during business hours today. He was off, but his manager, Drew, had a heads-up.

We would keep the Mercury and use the Caliber as trade towards a new car. We folded the remaining loan balance into the Escape's loan. Bit more pricey that I would have liked, but the perfect solution for this scenario. (The only other option was to sell it to Hummingbird for parts. There's no way her own BH would have paid the price we needed to close out her loan.)

The vehicle of choice? They pointed us to a 2018 Ford Escape. Very nice, brand new, full warranties, lots of safety features. Video.

From the online advert. Too dark to take a photo right now.

This Escape isn't the Titanium high-end package - no annoying sensors, unnecessary features like push start and remote start, or gaudy frills like leather to burn your ass every summer day. I like bling but I don't need it in excess.

It does have a lot of nice options that suit my personality as a driver.  I'm not sure I'll ever bother with the heated seats, but the backup camera might come in handy. I've missed having automatic headlights so I'm pleased to see them on the new SUV. BH and I have separate climate controls so, unlike the truck, we won't fight over too hot or too cold situations.

The dash reminds me of a cockpit minus the G1000 and yoke. Good grief. So many new things to fuck with!

Bonus: it has a white exterior, which is my favorite color for a car.  BH isn't fond of it. He doesn't understand how I associate with the color.

White hatchbacks = getting away from Mum on a Saturday to go into work with Dad; trips to the beach as a family; Disneyland!; taking my bike to the Gemco parking lot so Dad could teach me how to ride it properly; learning how to drive stick; long hours in rush hour traffic heading to Bakersfield and listening to my Dad break down how an engine works, how the Space Shuttle enters Earth's atmosphere and becomes a flying brick, or how to set stage lighting using Lekos and Fresnel to create mood. I was my father's best and only son, even if I did have boobs by time I hit 3rd grade.  Every happy memory from my childhood somehow entwines itself with my dad and a Ford Pinto hatchback....white, naturally, with a lime interior.

Old vs

new

We gave the Escape a test drive and then forced ourselves to become absolutely geriatric so we could do the Butt Challenge (pivot, sit, pull - just like in physical therapy).  Mum and Dad shouldn't have any difficulties egressing, plus there's enough room for a wheelchair.

I absolutely loooooovvve this SUV. So comfortable to drive, and the right amount of pep to gets us through Pittsburgh traffic.  She seemed to glow under tonight's full moon. BH and I named her "Little London" (London itself means "fortress of the Moon").

Frank and his crew will come out tomorrow to haul the Caliber away. We've got to get everything out of it before I head back to Steubenville to pick up Dad's antibiotic......and then head to East Liverpool for BH's VA appointment....and then head back to Steubenville to take Mum shopping. Holy shit, tomorrow is packed with fun.

All this aside, if you are looking to purchase a new or gently used vehicle, I highly recommend stopping by Team Automotive.  We chose the dealership on Brady near Franciscan University (Sales: 888-471-1350, ask for Frank) but we've also used the dealership out in Wintersville before.  They stand by their offerings and will not screw you over.
